U.S. Congressman Jay Obernolte (R-Hesperia) released the following statement on the passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023:

“The Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 enacts the largest reduction in nondefense discretionary spending in the history of our country, and it accomplishes this without raising taxes, which is why I supported it with my vote in the House this evening.

“However, this bill still falls short of the significant adjustments to overall federal spending needed to restore fiscal responsibility to our government and put us on a path towards a balanced budget. Passage of this legislation must be just the first small step of many towards accomplishing these goals. I look forward to continuing to work alongside my colleagues in Congress on solutions to achieve this, including proposals such as my Finding Federal Savings Committee.”

Congressman Obernolte has consistently advocated for fiscal conservatism in Congress, including through introduction of his Finding Federal Savings Committee Resolution and his Obernolte Balanced Budget Amendment as his first bills in Congress. The Finding Federal Savings Committee Resolution would help return fiscal responsibility to federal government by establishing a bipartisan committee within the U.S. House of Representatives modeled after the post-World War II era Anti-Appropriations Committee to find and recommend the modification or elimination of underperforming and nonessential federal programs. The Obernolte Balanced Budget Amendment would require fiscal stability by balancing the federal budget over five years with a provision to mandate that spending not exceed revenues unless approved by a two-thirds majority of both houses of Congress.
