YUCCA VALLEY — Electric vehicle drivers now have four new charging points as they travel through Yucca Valley, thanks to a partnership between the Town and the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District (MDAQMD).
Four new Level 2 electric vehicle free-to-use chargers are ready to power up those eco-conscious residents and travelers. With a total of $26,087 in Mobile Source Emission Reduction grant funds administered by MDAQMD, the town’s Branch Library now has two chargers available for use, while the Yucca Valley Welcome Center on Twentynine Palms Highway hosts the other two.
These EV chargers use a higher-output 240-volt power source — you might see an electric oven or common clothes dryer plugged into this type of power source.
Charging times are greatly reduced than charging on a Level 1 station. For example, a Mercedes B Class 250e can take 20 hours to fully charge (87 miles of range) with a standard Level 1 120-volt charging station. A 240-volt Level 2 charger can fully charge a 250e in three hours.
“We’re thrilled that Yucca Valley leadership was quick to take advantage of these grant funds and complete the project in such a timely fashion,” said Brad Poiriez, Executive Director of MDAQMD. “The more EV infrastructure installations we can facilitate, the more convinced folks will be to purchase electric vehicles, reducing air pollution in the process.”
A recent survey by OnePoll shows the pandemic has resulted in 44 percent of American drivers taking more road trips this summer. An increase in road trips means a substantial increase in vehicle emissions. Of that 44 percent, the average respondent has already been on two road trips this summer and has another two planned for the future. In another April 28th survey conducted by Longwoods International, 22 percent of those polled indicated they had changed existing plans from flying to driving.
“This is an important program as we accelerate the transition to electrification of personal vehicles,” said Mayor Pro Tem Merl Abel, the Town’s representative on the MDAQMD Governing Board. “For those folks traveling in and through Yucca Valley, they can visit our newly completed library, or spend some time at the California Welcome Center while charging their electric vehicle. We’re grateful to MDAQMD for their partnership in making these stations a reality here in Yucca Valley, and we will continue to seek additional convenient charging locations throughout Town for enhanced partnership opportunities.
