Senator Scott Wilk paid tribute to the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide by introducing Senate Resolution 83 on the Senate Floor. Wilk, a member of the California Armenian Legislative Caucus, solemnly acknowledged the 1.5 million Armenian victims of the genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Turks from 1915-1923.

Speaking on the Floor, Senator Wilk expressed his sorrow over the lack of acknowledgment and ongoing denial of the atrocities committed during the Armenian Genocide. He stated, “As a founding member of the California Armenian Legislative Caucus, it pains me to be introducing SR 83 commemorating the 109th anniversary of the Armenian genocide of 1915. Those who lived through that period are now dead and the Armenian people have yet to receive acknowledgment from those responsible. Even worse, it is still going on today.”

Wilk shared a poignant account of his wife’s great-aunt, who survived the genocide by faking her own death. This story highlighted the resilience and strength of the Armenian people who endured such tragic events. Wilk’s dedication to supporting the Armenian-American community was evident as he recounted the founding of the California Armenian Legislative Caucus in 2015 and its efforts to amplify the voices of Armenian-Americans and educate others about the genocide.

In his closing remarks, Senator Wilk emphasized the importance of standing against discrimination and hate, echoing the sentiments of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He emphasized the need for collective action to prevent such atrocities from happening again and to strive for a future of peace and mutual respect among nations.

Senator Wilk’s commitment to honoring the memory of the Armenian Genocide and advocating for justice was further exemplified by his legislative actions, such as the requirement for California’s public employee retirement systems to divest from investments in the Turkish government.

As the world commemorates the Armenian Genocide, Senator Scott Wilk’s resolution and dedication to preserving the memory of the victims serve as a testament to the enduring strength and spirit of the Armenian people.
