Rep. Jay Obernolte, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 23rd district since 2021, recently posted a series of statements on his official Twitter account addressing issues ranging from state fiscal management to honoring law enforcement officers.
On May 11, 2026, Obernolte criticized California’s handling of COVID-era unemployment debt, stating that “California failed to repay its COVID-era unemployment debt, and now small businesses are being forced to pay nearly 9 times as much in tax as businesses in other states. Every other state repaid its loan, but Sacramento’s mismanagement is once again falling on the backs of job”.
Later that day, during National Police Week, Obernolte expressed support for law enforcement officers and their families: “During National Police Week, we honor the brave men and women of law enforcement who put their lives on the line to keep our community safe. We also remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and pray for their families.”
On May 12, 2026, he shared details about a recent visit with local officials to a sheriff’s patrol station: “I appreciated visiting the Apple Valley San Bernardino County Sheriff’s patrol station with Captain Visosky, Mayor Nassif, and Councilwoman Leon. It was valuable to meet with local law enforcement, tour the facility, and discuss the work being done to keep our community safe. I”.
Obernolte has served in Congress since replacing Paul Cook in 2021 after previously serving in the California State Assembly from 2014 to 2020. He was born in Chicago in 1970 and currently resides in Big Bear Lake. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from California Institute of Technology.
